At 19, I walked into a local hospital and asked "how do I become a chaplain?" The hospital chaplain kindly conducted a brief interview process, then pointed toward the long hospital hallways to start visiting patients, listing to their pain and praying for their healing. Rather than classroom or conference training, it was an immediate plunge into the world of compassionate care for people on their worst day.
A few years later I repeated the tactic with a police department. After a much more thorough process, I became a chaplain for law enforcement officers. Rather than the predictability of a hospital, this new ministry meant wearing a vest and being on call 24/7. It brought countless hours riding along with officers, being a listening ear and caring heart as they processed unimaginable evil.
This work continued in several cities across the country with police departments as my primary work of pastoral ministry moved us around. Now, coming home to the west coast, I continue serving as a law enforcement chaplain and challenge others to do the same.
Our name comes from 1 Peter 3:15 where we read, "...sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect." Living as "salt and light" in this dark and decaying world will prompt others to ask about the hope that is in us. We must be "always ready" to give that answer.
The goal is simple, bring hope to those on the front lines.
